It’s not Saturday, but it is still a month all about poetry so watch me try to jam quality content discussing poetry, quotations, and poets into the remaining days of April. You can check out my last quote interpretation piece here.
“You want me to be a tragic backdrop so that you can appear to be illuminated, so that people can say ‘Wow, isn’t he so terribly brave to love a girl who is so obviously sad?’ You think I’ll be the dark sky so you can be the star? I’ll swallow you whole.”
This quote by Warsan Shire is EVERYTHING. It resonates with me so closely. Just the imagery in this beautiful piece of poetry.
“You want me to be a tragic backdrop so that you can appear to be illuminated, so that people can say ‘Wow, isn’t he so terribly brave to love a girl who is so obviously sad?’”
You imagine a devastatingly oncoming beautiful night sky in a rural area or away from the light pollution of modern day urbanization. The specks of the stars and the streaks of purple and pink as the sun is going down at the end of a good day. Maybe it’s a thunderstorm and the sky is a painting. She is beautiful, viewed as a sculpture. She is a beautiful item that has been sequestrated by a man that she once loved. She is finding out he only loved her because of a part of her that he objectified and presumed still was.
“You think I’ll be the dark sky so you can be the star? I’ll swallow you whole.”
She once would’ve sat back but she is livid. The way Warsan writes, you see all the anger and any remaining strands of melancholy joining together and becoming an unstoppable force and he falls for her and falls for her until she takes him over. She drowns him in his own love and want and soon desperate *need* of her. She has him on his knees. She makes herself a goddess and he is worshipping her and she brings him to utter ruins.
The power of this one line is not matched by anything that comes to mind before. I’ll swallow you whole, the threat in it, the power in her voice, the amount of ire. You can feel how much she means it in this very moment, you can feel her enlarging over this man and crushing him until he is NOTHING.
Warsan Shire is a beautiful woman. Look through her quotes, it’s worth your time, it feels utterly life changing. I will definitely talk more about her quotes and poetry in the future.
